What a Story Pin actually is

A Story Pin is Pinterest’s multi-page format: one pin holding several pages of image, text or video that viewers tap through like a short story. On the pin page it looks like an ordinary pin with a page counter; behind that one address, each page is its own media file. That is why the same tool works here — and why a Story Pin with eight pages gives you eight files rather than one.

Story Pins are called Idea Pins in older guides. This page covers both names; they resolve to the same pin type.

How to save a Story Pin

Four steps, and only the last one is about downloading — the rest is making sure you are pointing the tool at the right pin.

  1. 1

    Copy the Story Pin link

Open the Story Pin in the app or on the web and copy its URL. It looks like an ordinary /pin/<number> link, because the multi-page structure sits behind the same address.

  2. 2

Paste it into the box above

The resolver detects the pin type by itself — you do not pick “Story Pin” from a menu. There is no extra field and no second mode to choose.

  3. 3

    Check which pages came back

A Story Pin with several slides can return several files. Look at what resolved before downloading, so you keep the pages you actually wanted.

  4. 4

    Download the pages you need

Each page downloads on its own at the highest resolution Pinterest serves for it. Video slides arrive as MP4; image slides arrive as an image file.

What to expect from a Story Pin download

Six properties of the result — the first two are the ones that surprise people.

One file per page, not one file

Multi-page pins are multi-file. A six-page Story Pin returning six results is correct behaviour, not a fault in the tool.

Pages can be different types

A single Story Pin often mixes image pages and video pages. Each resolves to its own format, so the results will not all look the same.

Image pages: highest available

Image pages come back at the largest rendition the pin page exposes, usually 736px wide — the same ceiling as any other image pin.

Video pages: MP4 with audio

Video pages are H.264 MP4 with the audio intact, so nothing needs converting before you can use them.

Text overlays are not exported

Story Pins carry text that Pinterest composes when it renders the pin. The download gives you the media file; the caption text stays on Pinterest.

No watermark added

We do not overlay a logo and we do not re-encode, so each page is the file Pinterest serves for it.

Where Story Pin downloads look wrong

Four outcomes people report as failures that are usually not failures at all.

  • Only one file came back. Some Story Pins genuinely have a single page; the page counter on the pin is the quickest way to check.

  • The pages arrived as separate files and felt incomplete. They are not fragments of one video — Story Pin pages are independent, not chapters of a longer clip.

  • The text from the pin is missing. Pinterest composes that text layer when it displays the pin, so it is not part of the media that was downloaded.

  • One page is much smaller than the others. Resolution is per page, and a page published at a lower size stays at that size.

Story Pins or Idea Pins?

The two names describe the same format in different places. What that means when you are trying to download one.

  • Pinterest renamed Idea Pins to Story Pins in most markets; older blog posts and help pages still use the old name.

  • Both names point at the same pin type, so the same link works for either — there is no need to switch between tools.

  • A Story Pin and a video pin are different things: a video pin is a single clip, a Story Pin holds several pages.

  • If a pin has a page counter or tap-through pages, treat it as a Story Pin whatever the interface calls it.

  • For a plain video pin, the video downloader page fits better. This page is for the multi-page format.

  • If the pin you want is a single video, use the video downloader page instead — the multi-page handling here is unnecessary for it.
