Can I download a Pinterest GIF as an actual .gif file?

No — and no other downloader can either. Pinterest transcodes animated pins to MP4 on upload, so the .gif no longer exists on their side. What we return is that same MP4, unchanged.

Why does my animated pin download as an MP4?

Because that is the file Pinterest stores for it. Animated pins have been served as looping MP4 for years. The animation, the loop and the timing are identical — only the container changed.

Does the animation keep its loop and timing?

Yes. We pass the file Pinterest serves straight through without re-encoding, so the loop, duration and frame timing are exactly as the creator uploaded them.

Is there a watermark on the GIF?

No. We add nothing to the file. The bytes you save are the bytes Pinterest serves from its own CDN.

Do I need an account or an app to save an animated pin?

Neither. Paste a public pin or pin.it link and the download starts in your browser. No login, no install, no browser extension.

The animated pin I want is private. Can I still save it?

No. Only public pins resolve. Secret boards and private content are not visible to a signed-out visitor, so no web-based tool can reach them.

Why a Pinterest GIF saves as MP4

Pinterest stopped serving animated pins as .gif files years ago. When someone uploads a GIF, Pinterest transcodes it to a short looping MP4 and serves that instead — it is smaller, smoother and plays the same. So when you paste an animated pin here, the file you get is the MP4 Pinterest actually stores, not a .gif. It loops, it plays in any video app, and it is byte-for-byte what Pinterest hands to a browser.

This is not a limitation of our tool — no downloader can return a .gif that Pinterest no longer stores. If you specifically need a .gif file, convert the MP4 afterwards; the animation and timing are unchanged.

How it works

Three steps, and no account or app install. Everything runs in your browser.

01
Copy the pin link
Open the video on Pinterest, tap Share, then Copy link. Full pinterest.com links and short pin.it links both work.
02
Paste and resolve
We read the pin’s public data server-side and pick the best video source Pinterest exposes — usually 720p or 1080p.
03
Save the MP4
Hit Download MP4. The file is streamed straight to your device at its highest available quality, with no re-encoding and no watermark added.
